MOET – Mangochi Orphans Education and Training

MOET operates with a clear strategy and straightforward methods. Their organogram is self-explanatory, ensuring that everyone involved understands their roles and the expectations that come with them. The Board of Trustees meets two to three times a year, or as needed. The Management Board convenes every three weeks, while other divisions hold monthly meetings or meet according to plans developed in collaboration with the Director, Advisor, local authorities, and partners. Administratively, the Director reports to the Board of Trustees.

MOET is dynamic and proactive in implementing new ideas. They stay aligned with current educational agendas and consistently update their knowledge in key areas. At MOET, there is a strong belief in building the capacity of both students and staff. This includes continuous training for teachers and administrative personnel, focusing on best practices in education and how to support student learning more effectively. Training is conducted internally and through external sessions organized by national authorities or local governance bodies in Malawi.

In addition to its main school, MOET runs nursery schools in surrounding villages - currently one within the school compound and three in nearby villages. Construction of a fifth nursery is underway. Each nursery, as well as the main school, has its own School Management Committee. Teachers are also divided into smaller groups with specific areas of responsibility, demonstrating MOET's organized and accountable management structure. Regular audits and evaluations ensure transparency, and monthly reports are shared with international partners. MOET also maintains close collaboration with local stakeholders.

During my internship, I had the opportunity to participate in meaningful dialogue and teamwork with the director and school management committees. I was able to reflect on my studies and previous professional experiences in Finland and align them with MOET’s mission and my own learning goals.

Collaborative Problem-Solving Structure

At MOET, any issue related to teaching or learning is addressed collaboratively:

Teachers Head Teacher Advisor Director (if necessary) Management Board Board of Trustees.

Internship Involvement: Management and Leadership

I actively participated in various leadership and management activities, including:
-Organizing meetings
-Collaborating with institutions and organizations
-Strengthening collaboration with Nkope School for the Blind, including a joint visit with MOET's director, where we also met the area’s School Advisor (responsible for 12 schools)
-Contributing to educational initiatives such as:
  • Developing approaches to empower and motivate girls in themes like “Being a Girl Child in Malawi” and children’s rights
  • Promoting similar themes among boys, including respect, motivation, and the value of education.

Broader Themes and Impact Areas

I was proud to contribute to brainstorming and planning around:

-Inclusive education for children with disabilities
-Permaculture and climate change education
-Expanding MOET’s operations to include secondary education
-Curriculum development that includes children’s rights
-Teaching safe use of social media (digital safety skills).

These initiatives align with MOET’s vision of education and training as tools for poverty reduction and self-reliance. Learning happened in many forms, and all of it falls under the broad umbrella of leadership.

Through this internship, I familiarized myself with MOET’s operations, management strategies, and the educational landscape shaped by both regional and national challenges. I observed and engaged closely with the director, advisor, and staff, participating in their daily routines and strategic meetings. My hands-on internship may have ended, but the learning and reflection continue - this is a work in progress 🎒

MOET is driven by a sincere commitment to empower vulnerable children in their catchment area. Their dedication to inclusion and making a difference is tangible - you can feel it when you're there. They care deeply and act with heart 💚

Warm regards,
Tanja
